Administration Reveals Government Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
