“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
