Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be released later this week.
