Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
