During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
